Mehendi is so crucial to an Indian wedding that it has its own dedicated function, (especially on the bride’s side). We know, it beautifies the hands and feet of brides and grooms to be, but besides its adorning effect, it has antiseptic and soothing properties. If you ask me what Haldi is to an India Wedding, I would call it as the real MVP of all traditional ingredients coming straight out from the kitchen!
From applying the ubtan to the practice of yellowing the hands of the couple (i.e. Hath Peela Karna), Haldi has one of the most important roles in an Indian wedding.

Now coming to its associated benefits, you must be familiar with the fact that Haldi has medicinal properties. But what are they? Majorly, it works as an antiseptic and kills the bacteria on the skin. The ubtan made by mixing turmeric and oil works as a natural exfoliant, scrub and moisturizer to make the couple glow radiantly throughout the wedding ceremonies. Also, the curcumin present in it helps the bride curb pre-wedding jitters.
Red Vermillion Powder (Sindoor)

Well, this may not be a typical natural ingredient unlike the previous two but it is a mixture of turmeric, lime and a bit of mercury with cooling properties. So when Sindoor is applied on a bride’s hair partition, it helps the woman feel relaxed.
Besan (or Gram flour)
Who doesn’t love hot, crispy and sumptuous Pakodas while enjoying the music in a sangeet ceremony? But that’s not all where Besan is used! As the base ingredient of ubtan, besan is an ideal constituent for pre-wedding skin care packs. It’s non-sticky and can be easily washed off. There are various amino acids and proteins in besan that work towards skin lightening and exfoliation.

In many cultures, rice is sprinkled at a newlywed couple to bless them with prosperous future and happiness. Being a basic and essential part of the food menu, rice is also believed to represent sustenance in Indian culture. The offerings of puffed rice are poured into the sacred fire as a part of traditional customs in a typical Indian marriage ceremony.
